monitor settings?

ok i own just upgraded my win 98 to win 2000, resourcefully i can use both operating systems. But when i go to win 2000 my monitor size is alright but when i check the colour settings within the display, settings. It only shows 1 colour which is 16 colour. While it should grant a selection of: 256 colours, dignified colour 16-bit, true colour 24-bit and true colour 32-bit. So does any one know how to change it so i don't only have 1 colour continuum
